SAN DIEGO, July 4 (UPI) -- Tony Gwynn Jr.'s RBI single through a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the ninth Sunday handed the San Diego Padres a 3-2 decision over Houston.
Yorvit Torrealba led off the frame with a single off Brandon Lyon (5-3) and went to second on Aaron Cunningham's sacrifice. Everth Cabrera was intentionally walked and pinch-hitter Matt Stairs coaxed an unintentional walk to fill the bases.
With the Houston infielders drawn in to make a possible play at the plate, Gwynn hit a chopper that found a hole to the right of second base, scoring Torrealba with the game-winning run -- the third straight game in which the first-place Padres beat the Astros in their final at-bat.
Padres closer Heath Bell (4-0) picked up the win with a scoreless ninth inning. Starter Wade LeBlanc allowed one run on three hits over 6 2/3 frames.
Lance Berkman homered and drove in two runs for Houston.
