
SAN DIEGO, July 3 (UPI) -- Mat Latos tossed eight shutout innings and David Eckstein laced a tie-breaking double in the eighth Friday to spark the San Diego Padres' 3-0 win over Houston.
Latos (9-4) won his fourth straight decision, scattering four hits, walking none and striking out seven. He has allowed only five runs over 25 1/3 innings in his last five starts.
Heath Bell notched his 22nd save with a 1-2-3 ninth for the NL West first-place Padres.
Tony Gwynn Jr. collected a two-out single off Brandon Lyon (5-2) and came home when Eckstein delivered a liner to the left-center field gap to break a scoreless tie.
After Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley drew walks, Scott Hairston drove in a pair of insurance runs for San Diego.
Roy Oswalt pitched well in a no-decision for the Astros, tossing seven shutout innings, walking two and striking out seven.
