ANAHEIM, Calif., July 3 (UPI) -- Willie Bloomquist lined an RBI single in the 10th inning Friday to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
After the Royals had forged a tie with two outs in the ninth on a Mike Aviles double, Yuniesky Betancourt began the 10th with a single off Scott Shields (0-3). Betancourt advanced to second on a Scott Podsednik sacrifice bunt and to third on a Jason Kendall groundout.
Angels Manager Mike Scioscia then intentionally walked David DeJesus to get to Bloomquist but the strategy backfired when the Royals first baseman stroked a clean hit to left, driving in the go-ahead run.
Robinson Tejeda (3-3) was credited with the win by getting the final out in the ninth and Joakim Soria picked up his 21st save with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th.
Angels starter Joe Saunders hurled eight innings of one-run ball but ended with a no-decision.
