LOS ANGELES, July 1 (UPI) -- Phil Jackson said Thursday he would return for another season, possibly his last, as head coach of the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Jackson, 64, said in a written statement the Lakers could "count me in" as they pursue a third consecutive championship.

"After a couple weeks of deliberation, it is time to get back to the challenge of putting together a team that can defend its title in the 2010-2011 season," Jackson said. "It'll be the last stand for me, and I hope a grand one."

Jackson, who is looking ahead to his 20th season as a head coach in the NBA, had mulled retirement. The Los Angeles Times said Thursday Jackson received some good news on the health front this week when doctors determined his ailing knee would not require replacement surgery.

Jackson has won 11 NBA titles as a head coach, including five in Los Angeles. His post-season winning percentage of .697 is the highest in league history.
