Tigers P Zumaya out for season

MINNEAPOLIS, June 29 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya has a fractured right elbow and will miss the remainder of the season, the team said Tuesday.

Zumaya fell off the mound in pain after delivering a pitch during Monday night's game against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. He underwent X-rays and an MRI Tuesday and doctors diagnosed a non-displaced fracture of the olecranon in his pitching elbow.

Zumaya, a fireballing right-hander, has had a history of ailments, including right shoulder surgery in both 2007 and 2009. He hasn't pitched more than than 29 games in each of the last three season.

He was looking to make a comeback this season, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.58 ERA in 31 games over 38 1/3 innings.

The Tigers called up pitcher Casey Fien from Class AAA Toledo to take Zumaya's spot on the roster.
