DETROIT, June 27 (UPI) -- Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand has apologized after being arrested for allegedly driving drunk and says he's trying to make sure there's no repeat.
The Detroit Free Press reported Sunday Lewand was picked up on suspicion of drunken driving Friday night in Roscommon County. The Detroit News said Lewand had been attending a weekend charity golf event in Houghton Lake.
"I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them," Lewand said in a statement released by the NFL club Saturday night. "As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again."
Lions spokesman Bill Keenist confirmed the incident and told the Free Press Lewand had been released by police.
It was not known whether the team or the league would take disciplinary action against Lewand, who has been the Lions' president since December 2008 and has been the team for 16 years.
