WORLD CUP: Uruguay 2, South Korea 1

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, June 26 (UPI) -- Luis Suarez scored late in the second half Saturday to give Uruguay a 2-1 victory over South Korea and a berth in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals.

With the pretty goal -- his second of the game -- Suarez secured Uruguay's first quarterfinals appearance since 1970.

His shot from inside the penalty area on the right side curled around to hit the far post and bounced into the net at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Uruguay now advances to meet Ghana, a 2-1 winner over the United States in Saturday's other round of 16 match.

Suarez put Uruguay up 1-0 after 8 minutes on a shot from a tight angle after a defensive lapse.

The South Koreans, however, pulled even in the 68th minute after applying pressure early in the second half. On the play, Lee Chung-Yong headed home the equalizer off a redirected free kick into the middle of the box.
