RUSTENBURG, South Africa, June 26 (UPI) -- Asamoah Gyan's goal early in overtime Saturday boosted Ghana to a 2-1 victory over the United States in a World Cup round of 16 match.

Gyan collected a long pass from Andre Ayew, battled U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra while keeping his balance and put a left-footed smash shot past goalkeeper Tim Howard from 16 yards out in the 93rd minute, giving Ghana the lead for good.

The tired U.S. team had 27 minutes after Gyan's marker to try to forge another tie, but their best chance off a Steve Cherundolo corner kick was headed just wide by Maurice Edu.

With the win at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, Ghana -- the sole remaining African team in the World Cup -- advances to face Uruguay in the quarterfinals while the United States goes home after a thrilling World Cup ride.

Ghana went up 1-0 on an early goal in the fifth minute by Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Landon Donovan got the U.S. equalizer on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Regulation time ended in a tie, forcing the two 15-minute extra time periods.
