ATLANTA, June 26 (UPI) -- Chipper Jones blasted a three-run homer and the Atlanta bullpen survived a shaky ninth inning Saturday in the Braves' 4-3 inter-league win over Detroit.
After being shut out for six innings, the Braves erased a 1-0 deficit in the seventh when Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya (2-1) walked Gregor Blanco and Melky Cabrera and Jones followed by socking homer to center to provide the winning margin.
The blast gave Braves starter Kenshin Kawakami (1-9) his first win of the year. Kawakami held the Tigers to one run on two hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out six.
But his win was jeopardized in the ninth when the Braves nearly blew it. After Miguel Cabrera hit a solo homer to bring Detroit to within 4-2, Takashi Saito walked Carlos Guillen and Brandon Inge.
Eric O'Flaherty relieved and walked both Danny Worth and Gerald Laird to force in a run. Braves Manager Bobby Cox then brought in Peter Moylan, who finally ended the game when he fanned pinch-hitter Johnny Damon on a called third strike that appeared well outside the strike zone.
