Taylor Hall goes No. 1 in NHL draft

LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- Taylor Hall, who led his team to two straight Canadian junior hockey championships, was selected No. 1 Friday in the NHL entry draft.

Hall, 18, was chosen by the Edmonton Oilers. It was the first time since the Oilers entered the league in 1979 that they had owned the first pick in the draft.

Hall had 40 goals and 106 points in 57 regular-season games for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. He then produced 17 goals and 35 points in 19 playoff games.

The Boston Bruins used the second pick in the draft to select 18-year-old center Tyler Seguin, who played last season with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL.

Florida also went with a player from the OHL, choosing defenseman Erik Gudbranson of the Kingston Frontenacs.

The remainder of the first 10 selections were forward Ryan Johansen from the Portland Winter Hawks (by Columbus), winger Nino Neiderreiter from Portland (by the New York Islanders), winger Brett Connolly from Prince George (by Tampa Bay), winger Jeff Skinner from Kitchener (by Carolina), winger Alexander Burmistrov from Russia (by Atlanta), center Mikael Granlund of Finland (by Minnesota) and defenseman Dylan McIlrath of Moose Jaw (by the New York Rangers).
