MLB: San Diego 3, Florida 0

MIAMI, June 25 (UPI) -- Will Venable broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the seventh Friday and four San Diego pitchers combined to blank Florida 3-0.

Florida starter Chris Volstad (4-7) had given up four hits over six innings before Chase Headley singled to open the San Diego seventh. Venable followed by hitting a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right.

Yorvit Torrealba kept the inning going with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored the game's final run on a base hit by Oscar Salazar.

Clayton Richard (5-4) gave up five hits and struck out five over six innings to get the win. Heath Bell struck out two in the ninth to collect his 20th save.

San Diego won for the fourth time in five games to protect what was, at the beginning of the night, a 2 1/2-game lead in the National League West.
