TAMPA, Fla., June 24 (UPI) -- Kelly Shoppach had three hits, including a home run, Thursday in helping the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Shoppach was joined by Tampa Bay's B.J. Upton and Carlos Pena in the home run column and Willy Aybar drove in the other two Rays' runs to support Matt Garza (8-5). Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save.
Garza allowed three runs and six hits over eight innings. All the San Diego runs came in the second inning when Oscar Salazar hit a two-run home run and Jerry Hairston Jr. a run-scoring single.
Wade LeBlanc (4-5) allowed four runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings in taking the loss.
The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the first on Upton's seventh home run of the season. After the Padres' rally in the second, Tampa Bay tied the score in the fifth with Aybar's two-run single.
Shoppach put the Rays up for good with a lead-off home run -- his first of the year -- in the sixth and Pena completed the score in the seventh with his 16th homer of the season.
