TORONTO, June 23 (UPI) -- Matt Holliday singled in Randy Winn from third with two out in the ninth for the game's lone run Wednesday, giving St. Louis a 1-0 victory over Toronto.
Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals and Ricky Romero of the Blue Jays matched eight shutout frames before reliever Kevin Gregg (0-3) gave up the winning run.
Winn singled with one out in the ninth and, after Brendan Ryan was retired on a fly ball to right, a base hit by Felipe Lopez sent Winn to third. Holliday then worked the count full before driving a single to left-center.
Carpenter (9-1) started for the second time against his former club and gave up three hits while striking out seven.
Albert Pujols went 4-for-5 in the fourth St. Louis win in five games.
Ryan Franklin gave up a leadoff single to Vernon Wells leading off the bottom of the ninth but Alex Gonzalez promptly grounded into a double play. Franklin went on to collect his 14th save.
