
SEATTLE, June 23 (UPI) -- Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run homer and Jason Vargas went seven shutout innings Tuesday in the Seattle Mariners' 2-0 inter-league win over the Chicago Cubs.
Vargas (6-2) limited the Cubs to four hits and a walk and struck out seven en route to his fourth consecutive victory and the Mariners' fifth straight win.
Seattle's staff has given up just two runs in the Mariners' current streak and has a 23-inning shutout streak.
Alfonso Soriano had three of Chicago's six hits in their third loss in four games.
Ryan Dempster (5-6) went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out eight.
Gutierrez put up the only two runs of the game when he connected for his sixth home run of the season in the second inning with Jose Lopez on base.
