SAN JOSE, Calif., June 22 (UPI) -- The San Jose Sharks will let longtime goaltender Evgeni Nabokov leave as a free agent, General Manager Doug Wilson said Tuesday.
Nabokov, 34, earned $6 million last year in his 10th season with the Sharks, who advanced to the NHL Western Conference Finals but lost to the eventual NHL champion Chicago Blackhawks.
"We've made the decision to go in a different direction on the goaltender," Wilson told the San Jose Mercury News. "Nabby has been outstanding for the organization and has been a big part of our successes."
Nabokov has long been considered one of the NHL's elite and most durable goalies. In his career with San Jose, he compiled a 293-215-29 record with a 2.39 goals against average.
The Mercury News said the decision to cut Nabokov loose signals Wilson intends to concentrate on signing forward Patrick Marleau, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent, as well as restricted free agents Joe Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi.
