S. Williams, Wozniacki win at Wimbledon

LONDON, June 22 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Serena Williams and third-seeded Carolina Wozniacki advanced with solid straight-set wins Tuesday, the second day of play at Wimbledon.

Williams eased by Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-0, 6-4. The first set took 22 minutes as Williams had 20 winners among the 26 points she won in the set. She ended with 47 winners against 15 unforced errors.

Wozniacki's first-round win was even more lop-sided as she knocked off Tathiana Garbin 6-1, 6-1 in an efficient 47 minutes. Wozniacki won 70 percent of the points in the match, despite having her serve broken once.

In matches involving other highly seeded, No. 7 Agnieszka Radwanka topped Melinda Czink 6-3, 6-3; ninth-seeded Li Na defeated Chanelle Scheepers 7-6 (7-5), 6-2; and 10th-seeded Flavia Pennetta beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-0.

Tuesday's upsets included Kaia Kanepi's 6-4, 6-4 win over Samantha Stosur and Dominika Cibulkova's 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over 25th-seeded Lucie Safarova.

Stosur's loss means the finalists of the previous major tournament are already out at Wimbledon. Francesca Schiavone, who defeated Stosur in the finals of the French Open earlier this month, lost Monday.

Also, 14th-seeded Victoria Azarenka stopped Mirjana Lucic 6-3, 6-3 and No. 16 Maria Sharapova routed Anastasia Pivovarova 6-1, 6-0.

No. 24th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova was tied at a set each with Vania King when play was suspended Tuesday.

Other seeded players advancing Tuesday were 18th-seeded Aravane Rezai No. 19 Svetlana Kuznetsova; 23rd-seeded Jie Zheng, 29th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, No. 31 Alexandra Dulgheru and 32nd-seeded Sara Errani.

Unseeded players who qualified for the second round Tuesday were Monica Niculescu, Petra Kvitova, Ioana Raluca Olaru, Edina Gallovits, Alberta Brianti, Kai-Chen Chang, Roberta Vinci, Bojana Jovanovski, Anastasia Rodionova, Anna Chakvetadze, Arantxa Parra Santonja, Ayumi Morita, Kurumi Nara, Klara Zakopalova, Romina Sarina Oprandi and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
