Lakers' Bynum facing surgery

LOS ANGELES, June 22 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum, fresh off an NBA championship season, indicated Tuesday he will have a small tear in his right knee surgically repaired.

He's expected to have the procedure done in mid-July.

Bynum, 22, hyperextended the knee in Game 6 of the Western Conference quarterfinal series against Oklahoma City. The team later found a small tear of the anterior horn of his lateral meniscus but he played through the injury.

The 7-footer averaged 24 minutes a game while appearing in all 23 of the Lakers' playoff games, though his 15-point, 8.3-rebound average in the regular season fell off some. He had fluid drained from the injured knee several times during the post-season that culminated with a seven-game win over Boston in the finals, the second NBA title in a row for Los Angeles.
