WASHINGTON, June 21 (UPI) -- Cristian Guzman socked a tie-breaking homer in the sixth inning Monday, boosting the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 inter-league win over Kansas City.
Guzman's solo blast, his first home run of the year, made a winner of Livan Hernandez (6-4), who held the Royals to one run over seven innings as the Nationals broke a six-game losing streak.
Hernandez rebounded from his worst effort of the year in his previous start against the Tigers, scattering eight hits, issuing only one walk and fanning five.
Mike Morse ripped a long homer in the second inning to account for Washington's other run.
Bruce Chen (3-2) surrendered two runs on three hits over six innings in the Royals' fifth loss in six games.
Jason Kendall drove in Kansas City's sole run on a fielder's choice.
