Ex-NBA star, humanitarian Bol dies at 47

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 19 (UPI) -- The 7-foot-7 former NBA star and humanitarian Manute Bol has died in a Virginia hospital from a fatal skin condition, The Washington Post reported Saturday.

The newspaper said Bol, 47, died at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville from complications of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which he had contracted while on a humanitarian mission in his native Sudan.

Bol had suffered constant pain since a car accident six years ago and faced acute kidney failure as well as the skin disease.

His 10-year NBA career from 1985 to 1995 was legendary as then-tallest player in league history. He was a shot-blocking specialist who dominated inside, swatting aside 2,086 attempts and remaining the only player in NBA history to have collected more career blocked shots than points scored.

Bol twice led the NBA in blocked shots, including for Washington in his rookie season of 1985-86. He again was the blocked-shot leader with Golden State in 1988-89 and recorded at least 200 blocks in each of his first seven seasons.

Cyclist Kirchen in coma after heart attack

LIESTAL, Switzerland, June 19 (UPI) -- Cyclist Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg was in a medically induced coma Saturday, hours after suffering a heart attack while riding in the Tour of Switzerland.

Kirchen was stricken Friday night, hospitalized at Zurich University Clinic and put into a coma, where he will remain for 24 hours while being evaluated, Team Katusha said in a statement.

An infarction and thrombosis have been ruled out in preliminary tests, the statement said.

Kirchen was a 57th-place finisher in last year's Tour de France, falling from eighth-place in 2008 and seventh in 2007.

Complaint on security breach in World Cup

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, June 19 (UPI) -- The Football Association has complained to the organizers of the World Cup in South Africa after a security breach involving England's Cup team, officials say.

After England's 0-0 draw with Algeria, a fan managed to evade security procedures and entered the England team's dressing room, where after a "few verbals" he was escorted out, BBC News reported.

England's princes William and Harry had been present in the dressing room but left before the intruder gained entry, the BBC said.

The security-conscious Football Association released a statement of complaint Friday.

"This is not acceptable and thankfully no serious harm was done," the statement read.

Purshoth Chetty, managing director of the Cape Town Stadium, responded, saying there would be an investigation into how the fan had "slipped through the crack" in security.

"This merits a serious review," Chetty said. "Our security process covers all aspects and we do not believe we will need to change our general arrangements. But we are conducting a full analysis of how this happened."

Meanwhile, disappointed English fans, although furious with their team's showing, were "extremely well behaved" after the match, a British policeman in South Africa said.

"Considering the number of supporters that were there I think they have been extremely well behaved," Chief Superintendent Dave Lewis said.

"The fact that nothing happened, nobody was arrested, and given the amount of ale that was drunk, it was extremely pleasing," he said.

Edwards outguns Villeneuve at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., June 19 (UPI) -- Carl Edwards outran Jacques Villeneuve down the stretch Saturday to win the Bucyrus 200 Nationwide Series race at Road America in Wisconsin.

Edwards, who won his first NASCAR event of the year, led for 35 of the race's 50 laps but needed to fend off Villeneuve after a restart with nine laps remaining -- one of seven cautions in the road course event.

The final restart came after an incident involving Stanton Barrett and set up a three-lap shootout.

Villeneuve was running second to Edwards until he suffered engine failure on the final lap, winding up 25th. Canadian driver Ron Fellows took over second, finishing 4.3 seconds behind Edwards.

Brendan Gaughan finished third -- his best showing of the year -- and Nationwide points leader Brad Keselowski took fourth.

Owen Kelly of Australia, making his first Nationwide start, finished fifth.
