GALLOWAY, N.J., June 18 (UPI) -- Sherri Steinhauer shot a 7-under 64 Friday that left her one shot in front at the end of the opening round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The tournament is being played for the first time in four years and when it was last contested Steinhauer finished second.

Steinhauer, 48, has been out of action for more than a year due to major hip problems that required surgery. She recently was named a captain's assistant for the United States' 2011 Solheim Cup team.

"I didn't touch a club for 14 months, so to have a 64 under my belt after not playing golf, it feels real good," Steinhauer said. "Being out of competition, you have to learn how to compete again at this level. I need the experience again to be on top."

Natalie Gulbis shot a 65 at the Dolce Seaview Resort & Spa to share second place with Tania Elosegui. Those tied for fourth at 66 included Jeong Jang, Catriona Matthew, Inbee Park, Kris Tamulis and Ai Miyazato.

Alexis Thompson, who is making her professional debut at age 15, shot a 71 and was tied for 60th. Prior to turning pro this week, Thompson led the United States to a Curtis Cup victory last weekend over the team from Great Britain & Ireland.
