EASTBOURNE, England, June 16 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nicolas Almagro pulled out of the Argon International grass-court tournament in England Wednesday because of a hip injury.

Denis Istomin had moved ahead 6-4, 1-0 in a second-round match when Almagro said he couldn't continue. He only held serve twice in six games when play was stopped.

It wasn't known how the injury would affect Almagro's status for Wimbledon, which begins next week. On Wednesday, Wimbledon officials made Almagro the No. 19 seed for the year's third major tournament.

No. 3-seeded Gilles Simon took a 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-2) decision from Andrey Kuznetsov and fourth-seeded Julien Benneteau advanced from the second round with a tight 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 win over Dudi Sela. Sela actually won more points (86-85) than Benneteau in the match.

Seventh-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov came back for a 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-2 win over Yen-Hsun Lu and No. 8-seeded Michael Llodra also needed three sets in beating Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4.

Wild-card entrant James Ward took out Rainer Schuettler 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in a match between unseeded players.
