MLB: Boston 10, Philadelphia 2

BOSTON, June 12 (UPI) -- Rookie Daniel Nava hit the first major league pitch he saw for a grand slam Saturday, boosting the Boston Red Sox to a 10-2 win over Philadelphia.

Nava came to the plate in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and launched the first pitch from Joe Blanton (1-5) into the Red Sox bullpen in right field, giving Boston a 5-2 lead and securing a spot in the history books.

Nava, an undrafted prospect signed from an independent baseball league, became the second Red Sox player to hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance and the first since Rip Repulski on May 10, 1960. He also became the 10th player in Boston history to homer in his first at-bat -- Darnell McDonald did it earlier this year.

J.D. Drew homered and drove in two runs and Marco Scutaro chipped in with a pair of RBI in Boston's win.

Manny Delcarmen (2-2) got the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Scheduled starter Daisuke Matsuzaka was scratched and put on the disabled list only minutes before the game.
