SEATTLE, June 11 (UPI) -- Chris Pontius produced a hat trick Thursday and D.C. United survived a late flurry to defeat Seattle 3-2.

Pontius gave United a 2-0 halftime lead with goals in the 39th and 44th minutes. He then beat Kasey Keller for the third time in the 79th minute before being replaced by Jamie Moreno for the final 10 minutes of the contest.

The third goal by Pontius seemed unlikely to make a difference, but it turned out to be the game-winner after James Riley and Fredy Montero scored a minute apart. Montero's goal came in stoppage time.
