
NEW YORK, June 10 (UPI) -- Mat Latos and three relievers combined for a two-hitter Thursday, leading San Diego to a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets in the first game of a doubleheader.
Latos (6-4) allowed two hits, including a two-run, second-inning home run by New York's Henry Blanco, and one walk while striking out eight over six innings. San Diego relievers Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and Heath Bell each pitching one inning, with Bell picking up his 17th save.
David Eckstein had two hits and scored two runs for the Padres in beating Johan Santana (4-3), who allowed all four of the San Diego runs.
The Padres scored their first run in the fourth inning on Jerry Hairston Jr.'s sacrifice fly and took the lead the next inning when Eckstein doubled in Tony Gwynn Jr. and scored himself on Adrian Gonzalez's single.
San Diego made the score 4-2 in the seventh with Eckstein scoring on a double by Chase Headley.
