Red Sox P Papelbon on bereavement leave

BOSTON, June 7 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has been placed on the three-day family leave/bereavement list, the team said Monday.

No details were provided, but Red Sox Manager Terry Francona told The (Springfield, Mass.) Republican, "It's a personal, serious, issue and he has our full support."

Papelbon, 30, has compiled a 1-3 mark with a 3.00 earned-run average this season, converting 13 saves in 14 opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox activated right-handed pitcher Boof Bonser, who had been toiling at Class AAA Pawtucket on a rehabilitation assignment.

Bonser, a former Minnesota Twin, had shoulder surgery in February 2009 and has spent the last year recovering. If used by the Red Sox, he would be making his first appearance in a major league game since Sept. 27, 2008, The Republican reported.
