LONDON, June 7 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal reclaimed the world No. 1 men's ranking Monday and denied Roger Federer a piece of tennis history.
Nadal's French Open title, which he won Sunday in straight sets over Robin Soderling for his fifth championship at Roland Garros in six years, parlayed with Federer's quarterfinal tournament exit to bring the change at the top of the rankings.
Nadal showed a net gain of 1,820 ratings points this week while Federer, who had been the French Open defending champion, saw a net loss of 1,604, putting Nadal up by 310 points.
It is Nadal's second stint at No. 1 and ends a 48-week rule by Federer, who was previously No. 1 for a record 237 consecutive weeks and has spent a total of 285 weeks as the world's top-rated player -- one short of the record of 286 weeks set by Pete Sampras.
Juan Martin del Potro, a 2009 French Open semifinalist, missed this year's tournament after wrist surgery and caused the other changes in the Top 10. Del Potro dropped from sixth to eighth, allowing Soderling to move up one spot to sixth and Andy Roddick to go from eighth to seventh.
Novak Djokovic remains ranked No. 3 with Andy Murray in fourth and Nikolay Davydenko in the fifth spot.
No. 9 Fernando Verdasco and 10th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga round out the Top 10.
