NEWPORT, Wales, June 5 (UPI) -- Germany's Marcel Siem fired his third straight round of 69 or better Saturday, taking a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the Wales Open.
Siem carded a 5-under 66 at the Celtic Manor course, putting him at 11-under 202.
He had to fend off a competitive field headed by Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (66) and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark (68), who each ended the day three back at 8-under 205.
Siem benefited from a steady game. On the front nine, he garnered two birdies and seven pars to make the turn in 34 shots, then used a 15-foot birdie putt on 11 to ignite a stretch run, adding back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes.
The best round of the day belonged to Scotland's Stephen Gallacher. He used an 8-under 63 to finish tied for fourth place with Graeme McDowell (64) and Simon Dyson (65) at 7-under 206.
