NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- The New York Mets have placed left-handed pitcher Oliver Perez on the 15-day disabled list due to tendinitis in his right knee, the team said Saturday.
The move, retroactive to June 1, came after Perez complained Friday of discomfort in his right knee, which was surgically repaired last September.
Perez underwent an MRI Friday at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and was diagnosed with patella tendinitis, the Mets said.
Team officials said Perez (0-3) was expected to leave for Florida Saturday to begin his rehabilitation and would begin a throwing program when he can tolerate it.
Perez has struggled with a 6.28 ERA in 11 appearances, seven of them starts, for the Mets this season, allowing 33 walks in 38 2/3 innings.
