FORT WORTH, Texas, June 4 (UPI) -- Ryan Briscoe won the pole Friday at Texas Motor Speedway for Saturday's Firestone 550K IndyCar series race.

Briscoe had a four-lap average of 215.273 mph as he tries to move up from his current seventh-place standing in the season-long points race. He finished third in the championship race last year.

In the 2009 race at Texas, Briscoe led for 160 of the 228 laps, but Helio Castroneves beat him out of the pits during the final round of stops and took the lead for good with 53 laps left.

Castroneves, who qualified fifth, is looking for his first victory since that win in Texas.

Will Power, the current points leader, qualified third and Scott Dixon was fourth. Alex Lloyd, Hideki Mutoh, Danica Patrick, Mario Moraes and Marco Andretti rounded out the top 10.
