WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, June 4 (UPI) -- Tommy Armour III equaled the Glen Oaks Country Club 18-hole record Friday and took the lead after one round of the Principal Charity Classic.
Armour, a rookie on the Champions Tour, shot an 8-under 63 to grab a three-shot advantage over Dan Forsman and Russ Cochran.
John Bland shot a 63 on the Glen Oaks course eight years ago.
Armour has a history of producing low scores. He holds the 72-hole PGA Tour record of 254, which he posted in winning the Texas Open in 2003. He had a final-round 61 this year en route to a second-place finish behind Fred Couples at the ACE Group Classic.
The crowd at 4-under 67 after one round included Bernhard Langer, Nick Price, Mike Reid, Olin Browne, Gene Jones, Ronnie Black, Mike Goodes, Lonnie Nielsen, Mark O'Meara and Kirk Hanefeld.
Couples, who leads the Champions Tour money list, was tied for 27th after shooting a 70.
