SAN DIEGO, June 2 (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam homer with one out in the 11th inning Wednesday, giving the San Diego Padres a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets.
New York took a 1-0 lead into the ninth thanks to a five-hit, seven-inning effort by Johan Santana, but the Padres forced extra innings on an RBI single by David Eckstein and then won it with the blast from Gonzalez.
Eckstein's game-tying hit came off Francisco Rodriguez, who worked both the ninth and 10th innings.
Raul Valdes (2-2) came on to start the 11th and gave up a leadoff double to Tony Gwynn, who was then thrown out at third by Jon Garland on a grounder back to the pitcher. Jerry Hairston followed with a single and Eckstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Gonzalez followed with his homer to left on a 1-1 pitch.
That gave the win to Ryan Webb (2-1), who worked two scoreless innings.
