Nats rookie Strasburg set for June 8 debut

WASHINGTON, May 31 (UPI) -- Prized Washington Nationals rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg will make his major league debut June 8 against Pittsburgh, the team said Monday.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said Strasburg, the first overall pick in last year's draft, will get a call-up from Syracuse after making his last start for the Class AAA club Thursday.

The former San Diego State star has been exceptional at the minor league level in his first year of professional ball, going 6-2 and posting a 1.43 ERA in 50 1/3 innings for Class AA Harrisburg and Syracuse.

Strasburg signed a four-year deal believed to be worth $15 million after the Nationals drafted him.
