Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
PITTSBURGH, May 31 (UPI) -- Bobby Crosby's pinch-hit single in the eighth inning plated the go-ahead run Monday, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 decision over the Chicago Cubs.
After Sean Marshall (5-2) allowed a one-out double to Garret Jones, Lastings Milledge grounded out and Ryan Doumit was intentionally walked. Pittsburgh Manager John Russell sent Crosby up to hit for Jeff Clement, and he lined a 3-2 pitch into center field, bringing home the deciding run.
Octavio Dotel made the lead stand up, hurling a scoreless ninth to raise the Pirates' record against the Cubs this year to 6-1.
Evan Meek (3-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Ross Ohlendorf, who held the Cubs to one run on three hits over seven innings.
Chicago starter Randy Wells pitched well in defeat, tossing five shutout innings, yielding only three hits.
