ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 27 (UPI) -- Jeff Niemann took a shutout into the eighth inning Thursday and remained unbeaten for the season in carrying Tampa Bay to a 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Niemann (5-0) gave up three hits and extended his winning streak to six games dating back to his final start of 2009. The only run he allowed came on a leadoff homer by Mark Teahen in the eighth.
Tampa Bay bounced back after being swept at home by Boston. The Rays were outscored in that three-game series 19-4.
Carl Crawford put Tampa Bay in front for good with a solo homer in the first and added a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth. Evan Longoria homered for the Rays in the sixth, his 10th of the season, and Hank Blalock contributed a two-run single in the eighth.
The loss went to Gavin Floyd (2-5), who surrendered three runs on four hits over seven innings.
