SAN DIEGO, May 26 (UPI) -- Jerry Hairston's solo homer off Adam Wainwright accounted for the only run Tuesday in the San Diego Padres' 1-0 win over St. Louis.
Hairston spoiled an otherwise sharp outing for Wainwright (6-3) with his first home run of the season and provided just enough offense to give Jon Garland (6-2) the win.
Garland gave up six hits and two walks and struck out seven in seven innings for the Padres, who have won three in a row and lead the National League West. Heath Bell pitched the ninth for his 13th save.
Wainwright went seven innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out a dozen. The only pitch that cost him came with two outs in the second when Hairston cleared the left field wall.
St. Louis had the bases loaded with one out in the first inning but could not score, as Garland struck out the next two batters. Garland also pitched out of a jam in the second by striking out Ryan Ludwick with two men on.
Albert Pujols finished the night with three hits and Felipe Lopez had two hits for the Cardinals.
