Cruz, Gonzalez nab Players of Week nods

NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers and the San Diego Padres' Adrian Gonzalez collected the American and National League Player of the Week honors Monday.

Cruz took the A.L. award after hitting safely in all seven games last week, compiling a .458 average (11-for-24), socking a pair of homers, driving in 12 runs and scoring five times.

His accomplishments included driving in the game-winning run in the Rangers' May 19 win over the Orioles and the next day amassing a career-high four hits, including a three-home run, in a 13-7 win over Baltimore.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, collected the N.L. honors. Last week he batted in nine runs and hit .444 (12- for-27), compiling a .559 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage.

On Wednesday he went 3-for-5 with a 3-run homer and six RBI in a 10-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
