VIRGINIA WATER, England, May 23 (UPI) -- Simon Khan charged back from a 7-stroke deficit Sunday to post a stunning win at the European Tour PGA Championship in England.
Khan scored a 5-under 66, finishing at 6-under 278 and edging Luke Donald (71) and Fredrik Andersson Hed (71) by a single stroke.
The impressive win of the European Tour's flagship event earned Khan a $943,000 payday and moved him from 153rd to fifth in the Race to Dubai.
Khan, who won his second European Tour title and first since 2004, entered the tournament on a sponsor's exemption and didn't even know he was going to play until Monday.
He chipped away at his massive deficit with birdies the second, fourth and sixth holes, and two more birdies at 10 and 13 suddenly put him into first.
His 18-foot birdie putt at the par-5 18th sent him into the clubhouse tied for the lead with Donald, but Donald double-bogeyed the 17th to fall two behind Khan and never recovered.
Stephen Gallacher took fourth with a 1-under 70, finishing at minus-4, and Danny Willett registered a 3-over 74 to fall into fifth place at 3-under 281.
