Day survives water hazard for Nelson win

IRVING, Texas, May 23 (UPI) -- Jason Day won the Byron Nelson Championship by two strokes Sunday despite landing in the water on the 18th hole of the TPC Four Seasons Resort Las Colinas.

Day found the hole's water hazard for the third time in the tourney but managed to escape with only a bogey and end with a round of 2-over 72, finishing at 10-under 270 to claim his first PGA Tour victory.

Blake Adams could have forced a playoff if he had gained par on the 18th but he, too, hit his second shot into the water and ended with a double-bogey for a round of 2-over 72, two strokes in back of Day.

Sharing second place with Adams at minus-8 were Brian Gay (63) and Jeff Overton (71).

Scott Verplank (67) and Cameron Beckman (68) ended the tournament tied for fifth at 7-under 273.

Amateur phenom Jordan Spieth, 16 -- who became one of the youngest players ever to make the cut for a PGA event -- came back down to earth, shooting a 2-over 72 to finish with a share of 16th at minus-4.
