Rain delays Sharapova's semifinal bid

STRASBOURG, France, May 20 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Maria Sharapova had a first-set lead at the Strasbourg International Thursday when her quarterfinal match with Julia Goerges was suspended by rain.

Sharapova had a 3-2 advantage when play was called.

No. 5 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues had captured her first set against Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 when their match also was halted.

In the two quarterfinal matches that were completed, Kristina Barrois defeated Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 7-5 and Vania King ousted Anastasia Rodionova 6-4, 7-5.

King and Barrois are scheduled to meet in one of Friday's semifinals.
