ST. LOUIS, May 20 (UPI) -- Matt Holliday put St. Louis in front with a two-run double in the second Thursday and the Cardinals went on to down Florida 4-2.
Adam Wainwright allowed two runs in the first inning and then threw shutout ball over the next six frames while striking out eight. He improved to 6-2 and helped the Cardinals win for the third time in four games.
Facing an early 3-1 deficit, the Cardinals got a one-out single from Brendan Ryan in the second inning and he moved up on a sacrifice by Wainwright. Felipe Lopez drew a walk and Ryan Ludwick doubled home Ryan.
Holliday followed with another double that brought home both runners and ended the scoring for the day.
All four St. Louis runs came off Nate Robertson (4-4), who eventually gave up six hits and walked four in a six-inning effort. Ryan Franklin worked the ninth for his 10th save.
Florida had won six of its previous seven.
