STRASBOURG, France, May 19 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Maria Sharapova reached the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International Wednesday, while Sybille Bammer and Virginie Razzano were shown the door.
Sharapova made quick work of her second-round opponent, Bulgarian qualifier Dia Evtimova, 6-3, 6-0 in a match that lasted a little more than an hour.
The former world No. 1 will next face German Julia Goerges, who reached the quarters by upsetting the sixth-seeded Bammer 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) on the clay-court tuneup for next week's French Open.
French crowd favorite Razzano, seeded third, was bounced from Strasbourg at the hands of Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Arvidsson goes on to meet fifth-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, who advanced Wednesday when Czech Lucie Hradecka retired in the second set.
Also making the quarterfinals was American Vania King, who posted a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Alize Cornet.
