PITTSBURGH, May 19 (UPI) -- Struggling Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman will be temporarily benched to consult with coaches about his blown saves, manager Ken Macha says.
Macha told reporters in Pittsburgh the 42-year-old Hoffman, one of baseball's all-time top relievers, would be held out for a few days as he works with pitching coach Rick Peterson to change his mechanics in the wake of blowing five saves in 10 opportunities this season, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The newspaper said Macha indicated the 17-year veteran is delivering his pitches too much "over the top" and has lost the proper arm angle, affecting his pitch location.
Macha wouldn't say whether Hoffman is done as the team's closer but admitted he might have to make adjustments.
"He's sorry he's creating a lot of lost sleep for a lot of people," Macha told the Journal Sentinel. "He's a pro's pro. He wants to do what he can to help the team. He wants to get straightened out."
