DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 17 (UPI) -- Venus Williams holds the No. 2 spot in women's tennis, behind her sister Serena, after passing Caroline Wozniacki in the world rankings released Monday.
Although Venus Williams lost in the finals of the Madrid Open Sunday -- 6-2, 7-5 to Aravane Rezai -- she earned enough points to move up from last week's No. 3 ranking.
She started the year No. 6 but steadily advanced on the strength of a 26-4 record in 2010 with two titles and two of her losses coming in tournament finals.
Serena Williams, even though her play has been limited by a knee injury, is still No. 1. With the French Open draw this week, the Williams sisters' 1-2 rankings means they will be in opposite sides of the draw, setting up a possible Serena versus Venus final.
Wozniacki slipped to third and Jelena Jankovic is fourth but four players each moved up because of the continuing struggles of Dinara Safina, who has had back problems and is 5-5 this year. She dropped from fifth to ninth this week.
As a result, Elena Dementieva moved up one spot to fifth, Svetlana Kuznetsova is sixth, Samantha Stosur seventh and Agnieszka Radwanska is eighth.
Kim Clijsters held onto the No. 10 spot but has already withdrawn from the French Open with a foot injury.
