Kingston leads European Tour stop in Spain

SON SERVERA, Spain, May 13 (UPI) -- James Kingston shot a 5-under-par 65 Thursday and owns a 2-stroke lead one round into the European Tour's Iberdrola Open Cala Millor in Spain.

Kingston had six birdies and one bogey en route to an early lead. Alvaro Velasco was alone in second at 3-under 67 while Alejandro Canizares, Raphael Jacquelin, Gary Murphy and Thorbjorn Olesen were tied for third at 2-under 68.

Kingston opened his round on the back nine with a birdie. He added a birdie at the 14th hole and managed birdies at Nos. 2 and 4 around a bogey at the third hole. He also had birdies at Nos. 6 and 8 for a score that held up through the day.

Velasco, also playing the back nine first, birdied the 10th hole but dropped back with bogeys at 12 and 14. A birdie at the 16th hole got him back to even. He pulled into second with birdies at Nos. 1, 4 and 6. The final birdie came on a 75-foot chip shot.
