Jankovic moves to Madrid quarters

MADRID, May 13 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic continued her recent strong play with a straight-set, third-round victory Thursday at the Madrid Open clay-court tennis tournament.

Jankovic, the tournament's No. 7 seed but who this week moved to fourth in the world rankings, improved to 19-4 in recent matches with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Anabel Medina Garrigues in just 68 minutes.

She piled up six breaks in seven of Medina Garrigues' service games while winning 64 percent of the match's points.

Jankovic advances to the Madrid quarterfinals against Aravane Rezai, who defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-4 7-6 (10-8) in a tight match.

Also Thursday, No. 8-seeded Samantha Stosur stopped Patty Schnyder 7-6 (7-3), 6-2; 13th-seeded Na Li beat Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 6-4; and Shahar Peer got by Arantxa Parra Santonja 7-5, 6-2.

In addition to the Jankovic-Rezai match, the other Madrid quarterfinals have fourth-seeded Venus Williams playing Stosur, Na going against Peer and 16th-seeded Nadia Petrova facing Lucie Safarova.
