POINT VERDE BEACH, Fla., May 6 (UPI) -- Anthony Kim, fourth in this year's PGA FedEx Cup standings, will miss up to three months of PGA play following surgery on his left thumb.

Kim, who won the Shell Houston Open and has more than $2.5 million in earnings this year, underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. Doctors said the injury was suffered "several months ago."

"I was extremely pleased with how the repair of the ligament went and would anticipate that Anthony will be able to return to play in 10-12 weeks," Dr. Thomas Graham of the National Hand Center in Baltimore said.

Despite the injury, Kim made the cut in each of the eight tournaments he entered in 2010. In addition to his win in Houston, Kim was second at the Honda Classic and third at the Masters.

"While I had hoped to be able to continue to play through the injury, compensating for it was starting to cause other issues, including a sore shoulder that I was experiencing at the Quail Hollow Championship and we had to get it fixed," Kim said in a release. "I appreciate Dr. Graham's guidance and care through this and look forward to working through the rehab so I can get back out on tour and pick up where I left off."
