Baghdatis wins three-setter in Munich

MUNICH, Germany, May 4 (UPI) -- No. 5-seeded Marcos Baghdatis needed three sets but was able to advance Tuesday out of the first round at the BMW Open tennis tournament in Germany.

Rain caused scheduling issues in the clay-court tournament in Munich, with five matches either suspended or postponed. Baghdatis was the only seeded player to complete his match Tuesday.

Baghdatis dropped the first set but won about two-thirds of the points in the second and third sets for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Peter Gojowczyk. Baghdatis dropped serve three times in the first set but only once thereafter and had seven breaks against Gojowczyk.

Among the matches completed Tuesday, Marco Chiudinelli defeated Thierry Ascione 6-0, 6-4 in 52 minutes; and Jan Hajek needed just 68 to top Alexandre Sidorenko 6-1, 6-2.

Also, Simon Greul beat Nicolas Kiefer 7-5, 6-2; Daniel Koellerer got past Mario Ancic 7-6 (9-7), 7-5; and Pere Riba win a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 decision over Lukas Lacko.
