Steelers WR Sweed has Achilles surgery

PITTSBURGH, May 3 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed underwent Achilles tendon surgery Monday, team sources say.

The Steelers confirmed that Sweed underwent an unspecified surgery, but unnamed sources told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the procedure was to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained Sunday during the last day of the team's mini-camp practice.

Steelers head Coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Sunday that Sweed had injured his Achilles tendon.

The newspaper said it usually takes four to six months to recover from such injuries, while some athletes may return to action after missing only three months with the help of intense physical therapy.

The wide receiver was Pittsburgh's second-round draft pick in 2008 and has made seven career receptions.
