MLB: Detroit 5, Los Angeles Angels 1

DETROIT, May 2 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander allowed just three hits over 8 1/3 innings Sunday, pacing the Detroit Tigers' 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Verlander (2-2) yielded just one run on three hits while fanning seven without a walk in his strongest start this season.

The Tigers were led by Austin Jackson with three hits and an RBI. Miguel Cabrera, Brennan Boesch and Ramon Santiago each drove in a run to help Detroit finish a three-game series sweep.

The Angels, losers of four games in five tries, got singles from Torii Hunter and Maicer Izturis while Erick Aybar knocked in their lone run.

LA starter Jered Weaver (3-1) was touched for seven hits and four runs over just 4 2/3 innings.
