Woods misses the cut at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 30 (UPI) -- Veteran Billy Mayfair took the lead at the Quail Hollow Championship Friday, a feat overshadowed by Tiger Woods shooting a 79 and missing the cut.

Woods failed to survive the 36-hole cut for just the sixth time in his 13-year professional career. He has more than twice as many major titles (14) as he does missed cuts.

The world's No. 1 player shot a 79 at the Quail Hollow Country Club in a round that included back-to-back double bogeys.

"It does bother me, no doubt," Woods said. "But at least I get the weekend to watch and see how it's done, how real players play golf. Hopefully I can piece it together for next week and be ready to go."

It took a score of 1-over 145 to make the cut and Woods wound up at 153, shooting a 43 on the back nine to equal his worst nine-hole score as a pro. Woods finished in front of only 10 of the 154 players who completed 36 holes.

He was playing for the second time since he admitted to a series of marital infidelities. Woods is scheduled to compete next week at the Players Championship.

Mayfair, who won the first of his five PGA Tour titles 17 years ago, does not currently have exempt status on the circuit and finished first in a qualifying tournament on Monday just to get in the event.

He shot his second straight 68 for a 136 total, one shot better than two-time major winner Angel Cabrera.

Masters champion Phil Mickelson moved into a share of third place at 138 along with J.P. Hayes, Paul Goydos and Dustin Johnson.
